2000 Series Hold Down Action Manual Toggle Clamps

2000 Series Hold Down Action Manual Toggle Clamps – Best in Class, next generation products with enhanced performance attributes for DESTACO users

Our 200 series hold down action Toggle Clamp products include many of the first Toggle Clamp designs we developed for the industry many decades ago. Our vertical and horizontal handle versions are staples in the industry. They are very versatile clamps and are essential components for securing workpieces in place during welding, assembly, machining, testing, and checking fixture processes. Through voice of the customer activities, we were moved to design a new generation of products that provided greater utility to the customer. How could we make them safer to use? More ergonomic? More robust within the same operating envelope? As the leader and innovator in the Toggle Clamp market, we were up to the challenge and created solutions to meet the customers’ needs. Welcome our 2000 Series next generation Hold Down Toggle Clamp solutions.

What is a toggle clamp and how does it work?

A Toggle Clamp (often called a Hold Down Clamp or Fixture Clamp in workholding) is a manual or pneumatic powered clamping device that uses an over-center pivot mechanism to apply force and hold a workpiece securely in place. When the handle is moved to the closed position, the linkage passes over a center point and the clamp locks, resisting vibration and potential opening. This over-center action allows a Hold Down Toggle Clamp to deliver high holding capacity with minimal exerting force on the handle, making it ideal as a repeatable Fixture Clamp for production tasks.

What are the main types of toggle clamps?

  • Hold Down Toggle Clamp (Vertical Handle): The handle locks vertically; the clamping arm presses straight down, ideal as a Hold Down Clamp for general fixturing.
  • Hold Down Toggle Clamp (Horizontal Handle): The handle locks in a horizontal position for low-profile setups where clearance matters.
  • Push/Pull (Straight Line) Toggle Clamp: Converts handle motion into linear push or pull for locating and securing parts.
  • Latch-Action Toggle Clamp: Uses a hook to latch onto catch plates, common for lids, doors, and closures.
  • Squeeze-Action Toggle Clamp: Compact, portable clamps ideal for welding and assembly fixtures where a temporary clamp is needed.
  • Specialty Fixture Clamp styles: Variants optimized for specific industries, applications, or environmental needs.

Benefits of our 2000 Series Hold Down Clamps:

  • Exceptional strength and durability
  • Vertical and horizontal handle versions
  • Stainless steel and carbon steel models available on most series
  • Toggle Lock Plus options available for most models
  • Bearings in every pivot point for greater durability, strength, and smoothness
  • Significant reduction in potential pinch points
  • Robust handle stops

When should I use a toggle clamp instead of other clamps?

Choose a Toggle Clamp when you need fast, repetitive clamping with consistent force and a positive lock that resists vibration—common in welding, assembly, machining, testing, and checking fixtures. A Hold Down Clamp provides quick one-handed operation, fixed or adjustable clamping positions, and reliable repeatability compared to C-clamps or screw clamps. As a production Fixture Clamp, a Hold Down Toggle Clamp reduces setup time, improves ergonomics, and helps standardize processes.

How do I choose the right size toggle clamp for my project?

  • Required holding capacity: Match or exceed the maximum forces from machining, welding distortion, or assembly loads. Our Next Gen models increase capacity significantly within the same envelope.
  • Handle orientation and clearance: Select vertical or horizontal handle Hold Down Toggle Clamp styles based on space and operator access.
  • Spindle reach and arm length: Ensure the clamping arm and spindle can reach the part without interference; consider adjustable spindles for flexibility.
  • Mounting footprint: Verify the Fixture Clamp base matches your jig plate or workstation pattern.
  • Environment: Choose stainless steel for corrosion resistance, or carbon steel for general industrial use; add Toggle Lock Plus for extra safety and security.

What materials are toggle clamps typically made from?

Our clamps are offered in stainless steel and carbon steel. Stainless steel manual clamps offer superior resistance to rust, corrosion, and wear, making them the ideal choice for harsh or hygienic environments. Carbon steel models provide robust performance for standard industrial use. Both material options are available across many Hold Down Clamp series.

Legacy Models vs Next Generation Versions

Our engineering team significantly improved the design and performance of several series of hold down action Toggle Clamp products, incorporating patented technology to improve key performance factors like strength and durability within an equivalent operating envelope.

Handle Orientation - Vertical

Legacy Series Next Gen Series Improvements

202 → 2002: 3X greater capacity

207 → 2007: 2X–3X greater capacity

210 → 2010: 2X greater capacity

Handle Orientation - Horizontal

Legacy Series Next Gen Series Improvements

213 → 2013: 2X greater capacity

217 → 2017: 2X greater capacity

227 → 2027: 1.5X greater capacity

Application Example:
Legacy model 202-U is being used in an assembly fixture application to hold down a workpiece. More capacity is now needed to hold the part in place to assemble it securely. Its small size allows it to fit into tight spaces. But a stronger clamp is needed to provide more clamping capacity in the same space. Our Next Gen 2002-U can fit into the same space and has three times the clamping capacity as legacy model 202-U. Problem solved!

Stainless Steel and Toggle Lock Plus Versions

Stainless steel manual clamps offer superior resistance to rust, corrosion, and wear, making them the ideal choice for applications in harsh or hygienic environments such as food and beverage, pharmaceutical, and outdoor construction. Our Toggle Lock Plus option is a secondary locking mechanism designed to ensure the clamp remains in the over-center toggle lock position. This enhanced safety feature helps prevent accidental release during the clamping process, protecting the operator, machinery, and workpiece. For many users, combining a stainless steel Hold Down Toggle Clamp with Toggle Lock Plus creates a durable, safety-forward Fixture Clamp solution.

Choosing between the legacy 200 Series or the Next Gen 2000 Series depends on your application. Our 200 Series provides the legendary performance you depend on in standard industrial applications. The 2000 Series provides the best-in-class performance, strength, and durability available. You no longer need to always buy a bigger Toggle Clamp to get the holding capacity you need. DESTACO continues to offer a wide range of Hold Down Clamp and Fixture Clamp options to match your needs—no matter the industry or environment. Come to us … we have the solution for you.
