CHALLENGE

Equipped with a 17-pound transfer tooling system, Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Canada, Inc. (TMMC) regularly faced production challenges related to low precision, excessive scrap and downtime. In addition to a lighter, faster transfer tooling solution for improved operational efficiency on its stamping press, the company also needed to overcome specific functionality and ergonomic requirements.

SOLUTION

TMMC worked with DESTACO to develop two customized transfer tooling solutions, a 9- and 10-pound option, to increase operational throughput. Made of high-strength aluminum, DESTACO’s Accelerate® Lightweight Tooling reduces weight dramatically resulting in lower deflection for higher precision and reduced scrap. Both options were specially designed to fit TMMC’s existing stamping press for a cost-effective solution that’s ready to go and easy to operate.

RESULTS

In operation since June 2015, the lightweight transfer tooling solutions have provided TMMC with higher production rates, and reduced scrap and downtime. As a result, the company has experienced improved production quality and lower overall costs.  TMMC continues to work with DESTACO, as there are plans to modify the tooling for even more cost savings.
